New Energy Equity Closes 7MW Solar Project on New York Landfill with National Energy Development

Annapolis, MD, October 20, 2021 — New Energy Equity (“New Energy”), a national developer and financier of community and commercial solar projects, announced today the closing of a 7MW system with National Energy Development (“NED”), a New York-based distributed generation energy development company specializing in community solar facilities.

Located in the Village of Depew, NY, the Broadway solar farm, a 7MW (DC) ballasted fixed-tilt system, will be constructed on the Depew Village’s abandoned landfill, giving second life to the land atop the waste management system. The energy generated will provide local subscribers, such as homeowners, schools, local businesses, and municipalities, the opportunity to decrease their energy costs and utilize clean solar energy.

“New Energy Equity is excited to bring the Broadway solar project to life, as it not only provides clean energy to the Depew community, but also has a positive impact to land that otherwise would have very limited opportunity for use,” said New Energy’s President, Co-Founder, and CEO, Matt Hankey. “We are thrilled to partner with National Energy Development and look forward to a successful relationship together.”

Locally headquartered in the Village of Depew, NED purchased part of the landfill from the Village, and organized improvements to the site to make sure it was prepared for construction of the solar project. With those improvements made, New Energy and NED were able to begin development of the solar energy system.

“The Broadway Solar Farm is truly a win-win for everyone involved,” said Jim Bodecker and Paul Vargovich, co-owners of NED. “We’re proud to have this opportunity to remediate the Depew Village landfill while creating a renewable energy source for our community.”

New Energy and NED worked closely with Village of Depew’s Mayor, Kevin Peterson, Attorney, Sam Alba, and Dave Britton of the Village’s Engineering firm, GHD, for the past two years to make the Broadway solar farm project a reality.

“By partnering with Depew-based National Energy Development, the Village of Depew will be able to turn a barren, useless piece of Village property into a viable, clean energy-producing solar farm,” said Mayor Kevin Peterson. “The Village will retain 20 acres along a beautiful stretch of Cayuga Creek that could someday become a nature preserve much like Tifft Farm in Buffalo.”
